Home >> "The" Singing Busts

This is an expensive and somewhat involved project. All I can say is that it was worth (and still is) every cent. There are many different ways to accomplish the faces and music so I'll just tell you how we did it. YOU CAN REDUCE THE COST BY HUNDREDS IF YOU FIND SOMEONE WITH AN LCD PROJECTOR TO BORROW/LOAN. (Schools,Workplace, church etc.)

1) Two of us sat against a wall (You have to be perfectly still while filming) which was covered in a flat black sheet. One of us sat a foot or so lower so when projected, the busts are offset also. We lip synced Grim Grinning Ghosts. (48 takes!!) It's best if you are going to have two heads, to find a track with a lead and backup. That way, one can talk/answer the other. Remember to keep moving your eyes and facial expressions when not singing as it makes the effect so much better.

2) Take the video (I had a friend with professional equipment) to a video editing/outfit. You want them to do the following: Take out the color, bring up the contrast, remove the bodies and replace with a black background, Loop the tape to fill two hours, Have them edit the music track onto it so that it is "cd" quality. When done, you should see two disembodied black and white heads singing away. Immediately, make a copy!!

3) Take the video and photo's of the people in the video and locate a sculptor who will make the heads for you. I found 3 people who were willing in a small city like this! The key is to match the browline, nose and the basic shape of the head. The nose is crucial. Mouth area should be flat with a chin a little larger than normal so when one of the busts opens his mouth, it won't disappear. Do not KILN/FINISH IT! You want a flat-non-glossy finish.

4) Locate a projector. I bought a Sony CPJ-200 for around $450.00. It's so small it can fit into your hand but I use it for movies (Projects to a 14 ft. screen!!) and Superbowls etc. through the year. Play the tape through the projector. I use a stereo for the audio as this projector has a tiny speaker. Projector should be at ground level facing up. Usually about 5 feet away from the busts. Aim for the nose of ONE of the heads, Once you get that one, then move the second one into position. It will take a lot of time getting the aiming right but don't fret! Remember, pulling the camera away and vice versa makes a huge difference so make small little moves.

COSTS: Pay a sculpture to make 2 busts. $ 85.00 Projector (I use a Sony CPJ-200) $400.00 Video tape edit/ $100.00 Two pedestals (Hobby Store) $ 24.00 Borrow a VCR/Stereo from the house $ FREE
